IDFA (Identifier for Advertisers)

IDFA, also known as Apple Advertising ID, is a unique number created by Apple that identifies an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Apple uses IDFA to identify individual devices for advertising purposes. The system accomplishes this by assigning an IDFA to each device that receives an Apple ad. This allows advertisers to track how well their campaigns are performing and provide detailed data on how many times their ads have been viewed.

In other words, IDFA is a unique identifier for each iOS device. The Apple Advertising ID (IDFA) is a method of tracking the use of Apple devices. It helps them target you with ads across the app, game and service ecosystems. To learn more about how IDFA works, you can visit Apple's support page. https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT204244

Why IDFA?

When reaching their customers, the ads served with IDFA are personalized for all applications that use advertising networks. This, in turn, means high conversions, campaigns with high success rates, and massively increased download numbers.

With WWDC in 2020, Apple has made a change in the new iOS 14 version, including IDFA. With the update, IDFA has announced that it will now be an optional feature only. It is also underlined that explicit consent will need to be declared for users to be able to collect IDFA's permissions. This strategic move by Apple has brought an innovation to the use of user and device data collected from applications in the advertising industry. Thus, the data could only be shared with third party companies with permission received through the App Tracking Transparency Framework.

IDFA and Other Mobile Advertising Identities

In addition to IDFA, there are two other types of mobile advertising IDs supported for specific audiences. So, what is a mobile advertising ID? In short, mobile advertising IDs are the methods developers use to identify users of their mobile apps.

- Android Advertising ID: It is an advertising ID that Google provides under Android.
- Facebook App User IDs: They are the identities of the people who use the application, which can be pulled through the Facebook SDK.
